What Are "Dangerous Goods" on Amazon?
Amazon classifies products as dangerous goods if they contain:
- Flammable liquids or gases (perfumes, aerosols, lighter fluid)
- Corrosive substances (certain cleaning products)
- Lithium batteries (phones, laptops, power banks)
- Compressed gases (aerosol cans, CO2 cartridges)
- Toxic substances (pesticides, certain medications)
- Oxidizers (certain pool chemicals, hair developer)
The Hazmat Review Process
- List your product in Seller Central
- Amazon flags product for hazmat review (automatic)
- Upload Safety Data Sheet (SDS) — Must be compliant and current
- Upload exemption sheet if product is not actually hazmat
- Amazon reviews (2–5 business days)
- Result: Approved for standard FBA, approved for DG program, or rejected
SDS Requirements
Your Safety Data Sheet must include:
- All 16 GHS sections (Globally Harmonized System)
- Current date — Must be within 5 years
- Product identifier matching your listing
- Hazard classification
- Composition/ingredients
- Handling and storage requirements
- Transport information (UN number, proper shipping name)
Enrolling in the DG Program
Some hazmat products require enrollment in Amazon's Dangerous Goods FBA program:
- Apply through Seller Central
- Complete hazmat training
- Acknowledge DG shipping requirements
- Pass compliance review
