Amazon FBA Delivery After US Customs Release

    By Indray Editorial

Plan US Amazon FBA delivery after customs release: confirm pickup availability, prep, labels, shipment details, appointments and receiving handoffs.

Separate milestones show US customs release, carrier delivery and Amazon receiving, with delivery and receiving tracked separately.

Customs release is an important milestone for an imported Amazon shipment. The next task is making the inventory ready for its domestic move and Amazon's receiving process. A released container can still need pickup authorization, warehouse work, shipment labels or a delivery appointment.

For freight forwarders and manufacturers, the practical question is: what evidence must each team pass to the next team before the freight moves? This checklist focuses on those handoffs for inventory entering US FBA.

Confirm the release and pickup status separately

Ask the broker to confirm the applicable customs release and identify any unresolved agency holds. Keep that confirmation with the entry and shipment references. Amazon's import guidance also makes clear that Amazon and its fulfillment centers do not act as importer of record; the importing party must arrange that responsibility. Amazon: Import and export inventory.

For ocean containers, separately check the shipping line's release, terminal availability, pickup appointment and equipment arrangements. APM Terminals' Miami FAQ, for example, explains that a container can have customs and shipping-line releases yet remain physically unavailable because of its yard position or congestion. A release confirmation does not establish every pickup condition. APM Terminals: Miami availability FAQ.

Give the drayage coordinator the container and bill-of-lading references, confirmed pickup location, receiving warehouse details and applicable last-free-day information. Confirm the empty-return instructions separately. These are shipment-specific checks, rather than a single nationwide port procedure.

Decide where the inventory goes next

Choose between a move to a preparation location and an Amazon delivery only after reviewing the physical load.

A warehouse stop can support unloading, inspection, labeling, repacking or separating inventory for different destinations. It also provides a place to resolve mismatches before booking the outbound move. Indray's warehousing and distribution services include storage, cross-docking and value-added work such as labeling and inspections.

Direct delivery needs its own readiness review. An ocean container's arrival does not establish that its loading configuration, shipment paperwork or assigned destination is suitable for Amazon. Have the seller and carrier confirm the specific delivery requirements before choosing this route.

Match the Amazon plan to the physical shipment

The seller or authorized account operator should confirm the current shipment in Seller Central. Amazon's Send to Amazon workflow supports shipment creation, packing and shipping-method selection. Amazon: FBA guide and Send to Amazon.

Before domestic dispatch, compare the plan with what will actually leave the preparation location:

    • Shipment IDs and assigned receiving destinations.
    • SKUs, quantities and contents of each outbound box.
    • Actual ship-from address and selected shipping method.
    • Current labels and carrier information.

If the imported load is divided between destinations, create a clear loading list for each outbound shipment. Do not route all inventory to a convenient facility simply because it is nearby.

For example, cartons opened for inspection or repacking may no longer match the original box-content records. Reconcile the physical cartons with the shipment workflow before printing and applying the outbound labels.

Complete preparation before arranging the final move

Assign a named owner for each preparation task, whether the work happens at the manufacturer or a US preparation location. Confirm product eligibility, packaging, barcode requirements and any special handling against the current instructions for that SKU.

For US FBA shipments created from January 1, 2026, Amazon no longer offers its FBA prep and item-labeling services. Arrange required work before sending inventory to the fulfillment center. Amazon's staff clarification also explains the exception for shipments created before that date. Amazon staff: Prep and labeling policy.

A useful preparation record lists the work completed, quantities checked, discrepancies found and who approved the freight for dispatch. Photographs can support that record, especially after carton repair or pallet rebuilding. Keep unresolved discrepancies visible to the seller and dispatch team.

Check unit, box and pallet identification

Treat product identification and shipment identification as separate checks. Confirm the permitted product barcode for each SKU; avoid assuming every product uses the same barcode option.

For shipment packaging, Amazon's US label guidance requires a unique FBA box ID label on each shipping box. Those labels should not be copied for additional boxes. For pallet shipments, the guidance specifies four pallet labels, one near the top center of each side. It also says that box-content 2D barcodes do not replace FBA box ID labels. Amazon: Shipping label requirements.

Before loading, check that the correct label is on the correct box, barcodes remain readable, and measured weights and dimensions match the shipment records. Confirm the applicable pallet, carton and product requirements in Seller Central rather than relying on one generic specification sheet.

Confirm the carrier and appointment handoff

Choose parcel, LTL or truckload service around the shipment's volume, configuration and receiving requirements. Share the actual freight-ready date and pickup site's access and loading arrangements with the carrier.

Amazon's official LTL guidance says that non-partnered LTL deliveries require an appointment arranged in advance by the seller or carrier. It also identifies the bill of lading, Amazon reference IDs, shipment IDs and tracking references as necessary delivery information. Amazon: Inbound LTL documentation and appointments.

For the selected service, confirm who books the appointment, which current booking process applies, the receiving facility and the accepted date and time. Record these details with dispatch. A requested slot or estimated delivery window should not be treated as a confirmed appointment. If readiness changes, agree the revised pickup and delivery plan before the truck leaves.

Track receiving after the carrier delivers

Keep carrier delivery evidence and Amazon inventory status in separate records. Amazon distinguishes delivered, checked-in and receiving stages; delivery alone does not establish that every unit has been processed. Review the shipment's current events and estimates in Seller Central. Amazon: How to track FBA shipments.

Retain the signed shipping documents, tracking references, delivery evidence, packing records and any exception photographs. Give the seller's account team responsibility for comparing expected inventory with Amazon's receiving records and following the account's current reconciliation process. Avoid promising a fixed receiving time.

Coordinate the stages through one point of contact

Indray coordinates customs clearance, port and rail drayage, warehouse work and Amazon FBA preparation, labeling, appointments and delivery.

Contact Indray with the arrival location, release status, inventory details, preparation needs and current Amazon shipment plan. That gives the team a practical starting point for coordinating the remaining handoffs.
